Hazmat Glove Selection

Hazmat Glove Selection

💥Hazmat Glove Selection 💥

Our customers ask, we provide the answers

We provide many different types of gloves in our trailers and hazmat glove selection is complex. The availability of gloves is indeed bewildering and difficult to remember, especially for the part-time responder. What gloves do we use here, there, when and why?

Beside the usual generic disposable gloves found in most toolboxes, vinyl, latex and nitrile versions, there are many specific materials that provide protection from specific chemicals. Here are some frequently used gloves:

  • Butyl Rubber Gloves: Provide protection from nitric acid, sulfuric acid, hydrofluoric acid, rocket fuels, and peroxides. These gloves are highly impermeable to many gases, chemicals, and aqueous solutions, and resist oxidation and ozone attack. They have high abrasion resistance and remain flexible at low temperatures.
  • Natural Latex or Rubber Gloves: Provide protection from most aqueous solutions of acids, alkalis, salts, and ketones. They resist abrasions during grinding, sandblasting, and polishing. These general purpose gloves are pliable and comfortable.
  • Neoprene Gloves: Provide protection from hydraulic fluids, gasoline, alcohols, organic acids, and alkalis. They offer good pliability and finger dexterity, high density, tensile strength, plus high tear resistance.
  • Nitrile Rubber Gloves: Provide protection from chlorinated solvents, and are intended for jobs requiring dexterity and sensitivity. They resist abrasion, puncturing, snagging, and tearing.
  • N-DEX Gloves: This popular nitrile glove provides splash and spill protection against a wide variety of chemicals, although it is not intended for extended immersion activities. It is available in several sizes, plus low-powder and powder-free options.
  • PVA Gloves: Resist strong solvents, such as chlorinated and aromatic solvents. This material is water soluble (polyvinyl alcohol) and cannot be used in water or water-based solutions.
  • PVC Gloves: Good for handling materials coated or immersed in grease, oil, acids, or caustics. Resists abrasion. Can be purchased lined or unlined depending on dexterity requirements.
  • Viton Gloves: Resist chlorinated and aromatic solvents, plus many other chemicals. This glove material can be used in water-based solutions.
  • Silvershield Gloves: Resist a variety of toxic and hazardous chemicals. This lightweight laminate is flexible, but not form-fitting, which affects user dexterity.

Tsehum Harbour Diesel Spill

Diesel Spill Tsehum Harbour 1

💥Tsehum Harbour Diesel Spill 💥

Another case where nobody is accountable

5 Feb 2020. Earlier this week. A recent sunken boat in Tsehum Harbour diesel spill on southern Vancouver Island. Estimate of 200 liter diesel, 25% recovered, the rest floating around the other forty acres of marinas in the area.

Transport Canada at the time says not their problem…Coast Guard in ‘The Rock’ says ‘Oh no, under the control of the Receiver of Wrecks’. BC ER says not ours, call Coast Guard. Tsehum Harbour Authority says ‘ We notified Transport Canada’, don’t know what to do ourselves. WCMRC, not called. WTF?

Eventually some absorbent was laid out by the commercial diver to try mop up some of it before divers were asked to perform salvage in that diesel-brine. Nowhere near enough in the entire harbour! How can this sort of nonsense still happen? Who is really charge? Who isn’t doing their job? Or do we have too much government with insufficient accountability?

Maybe 40 gallons of diesel doesn’t warrant it…maybe we in the industry should all pack it in and become politicians…loads of talk and nothing else.

This spill could have been contained within minutes if the right equipment had been available. Tsehum Harbour Authority was too ignorant to see diesel gushing out despite them watching this boat sink. But then the desire, the process and the training would need to be there.

How does one fix this? Here in Canada we are WAAAAAY behind the Europeans and the Americans where putting technology to work for us is concerned.

Esquimalt Oil Spill – $50,000 ???

Esquimalt Oil Spill - Failure to achieve rapid response

💥Esquimalt Oil Spill – $50,000 ??? 💥

ESQUIMALT EXPERIENCES YET ANOTHER OIL SPILL THAT LASTS FOR MANY DAYS.

Rapid response, training and the right tools are key to efficient containment. Local authorities do little to get any training time for their staff.

This Esquimalt Oil Spill wasn’t the first time in that harbour. Sea boom is great for long term containment, eventual secondary containment, yet takes a huge amount of effort and time to deploy. We have used that very 500ft of BC Hazmat’s boom and know the effort involved…it is a dinosaur where rapid response is concerned.

There are better tools these days that can be deployed in a matter of minutes, let alone days as was the case here again. When minutes matter….

Shoutout to the Nucor Environmental guys to working efficiently against constraints. Municipalities and similar might do themselves a favor to retain companies who know and practice how to do this stuff…

Supreme Court Rules Against Horgan

Pipeline

💥Supreme Court Rules 💥

SUPREME COURT RULES AGAINST B.C. IN BATTLE OVER TMX PIPELINE

This is excellent news. Mr. Horgan needs to understand despite his NDP and union-style ‘incentives’, money does not grow on trees. In this province we have managed to destroy the fishing industry that once flourished, continue to export worthless logs instead of manufacturing something useful with them, effectively destroying margins, are unable to incentivize any real industrial development which could generate many well-paying jobs and stabilize a workforce. We love flipping burgers at $12.65/h. Not!

Unless we start being a little bit more business-like in this province, reducing government-burden and do something that generates some GDP, it will be a case of ‘last one out, turn off the lights’ very soon. We have more oil in Alberta than we, they, know what to do with. Let’s take out share of export profits, seeing nobody has the government support to build a refinery on the west coast. And no, you can’t tax this province into prosperity, John Horgan.

As an industry, those of us involved in pipeline, spill prevention, WHMIS, environmental sciences, trucking, education etc, are more than capable of mitigating anything that may arise from running some old through a well-managed pipeline network.

I suggest government, both Canadian Federal, and this British Columbia inefficiency called the NDP, gets out of mismanaging resources they have absolutely zero idea about and leave that to competent private enterprise. Maybe provide some tax-breaks to those who actually work and produce. We are getting tired of leechers funded by overtaxed British Columbians.

By the way, did you enjoy the the warmth that you enjoyed in your home in the last week, even here on the island? How was your office in Victoria, Mr. Horgan? Much of that heat came from hydrocarbons…

Let’s get on with these pipelines!
